Acropolis of Athens

This is a true wonder of history. In ancient times it was called cecropia after Cecros the first king of Athens. This is spread out on a outcrop above Athens. Its also an UNESCO world heritage site. You will see the best of ancient architecture Greece has to offer. I would recommend going in nice weather and giving yourself at least an hour or two to explore. Try to go in the morning early to see the golden hour and to avoid the traffic as this is one of the most visited sites in Athens.

Parthenon.

The Parthenon is one of the oldest ruins in the world that has been built for one of the most powerful of the greek gods Athena. This is one of the highest rated sites in Athens and is a must see for anyone visiting the city. There is a lot of remains to see and it has a long history of being destroyed and rebuilt. Many have recommended you get there early too. There will be huge demand and many also recommend getting a guided tour in order to understand what means what without just guessing. Also expect there to be a lot of construction as it’s always being maintained and revamped. Some people enjoy being there around 6:30 pm to see the light shine through the columns so that is something to keep in mind when planning your visit.  There is no shade so bring your water, hats and sunscreen.

Acropolis Museum

One of the most interesting places to learn about Greek history. You can find many of the artefacts that have been found during the excavation of Acropolis and other sites all over Greece. From statues to sculpture this is absolutely worth a visit . It’s well laid out and tells stories that go back thousands of years. This will help you get some context first before visiting the other ancient sites like Acropolis. You can easily spend 3 hours in this place and no visit to Athens will be complete without a visit to the Acropolis Museum.
